Meet your community midwife

Alexis Starting LM, CPM

Welcome, and thank you for your interest in learning about SYV Midwifery, and midwife Alexis.

Midwives serve families with individualized and highly skilled clinical care. We are a large global network, and are commonly the primary care provider for pregnancy worldwide outside of America. As a California Licensed Midwife (LM) Alexis serves as a primary health care provider who clients can choose in lieu of an Obstetrician/Gynecologist. Licensed Midwives provide comprehensive care for the duration of pregnancy through birth and postpartum for those who are considered low risk.

Alexis has served as a combination of both a doula and apprentice midwife since 2006. She has attended births since 2007 and completed her formal midwifery education through National Midwifery Institute (NMI) in 2021. Alexis’ teachers and guides in midwifery have been a combination of indigenous and Western teachers, and she weaves aspects of these modalities into her midwifery care. She believes strongly in the scientific efficacy, common sense, and wisdom of traditional/pre-institutionalized birth and postpartum practices, and is committed to learning all she can to bring these support systems back to the community.

Alexis opened the doors to her solo practice, SYV Midwifery in Santa Ynez, California in January 2022 and has had the pleasure and privilege of serving the community since. Clients enjoy the beautiful, bright, and calm environment of her country office - it  has been likened to a sanctuary for clients during their care, as well as to the extended community during educational and community building events.

Alexis’ goal is to work with you to bring this inherently normal (although also extraordinary) life passage back to the basics, as much as possible, so that by the time you are birthing your child you feel safe and trusting and can allow your instinctive self, your inner mammal to run the show. Things tend to go smoothly when we can help facilitate this. She is excited to co-create a community midwifery model with you. Her goal is to put you and your family in the driver’s seat of your experience. You are the life-givers and guides for the next generation, you are the experts of yourselves and your family.

Alexis takes a low volume client load so that she can truly focus on each client and provide highly individualized care.

Alexis is also mother to two incredible boys, 12 and 16 years old, who were both born peacefully at home. When she is not attending births, she prioritizes filling her cup and fortifying her nervous system by spending time with family, in nature, and in quiet so that she can be a more balanced and grounded community member. You will also find her sitting by the fire, working with plant medicines, and re-learning traditional ways and practices.

Thank you for considering her to guide you as you bring in new life.
